"cho fun" - to punish oneself for one's anger. It's one letter, (sic); 6th century, ink on paper. Seen at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, Mingei-Kan, a small museum, founded by the philosopher Soetsu Yanagi (1889-1961), who aimed to promote Mingei Movement and fit the beauty into everyday life. Objects are displayed anonymously and without much information (to be appreciated as they are).
