Yukizuri built of rice rope protect 160 year old Karasaki pines in the Kenrokuen garden, in Kanazawa.
Some 800 pieces of string are attached to bamboo poles in order to protect fragile branches from heavy snow.
The task, which requires a dozen skilled gardeners and which takes them a whole day, is repeated each year in November.
Some 1,000 trees in Kenrokuen are protected in that way.
Located along the norther coast of Honshu, where Siberian winds dump large amounts of heavy snow, Kanazawa is famous for its severe winters and yukizuri are cosidered a beloved symbol of the season.
