fitful moth

"The old house was as quiet and as stil as eternity itself; to Gene it was as ephemeral in its shift of light and shade as a fitful moth... "

Poet Guy Davenport, Ralph Eugene Meatyard's close friend, on his photography; quoted by Rebecca Norris Webb.

By vocation an optician, later in life Meatyard would refer to himself as a "dedicated amateur."

Inspired by Zen Buddhism and jazz, he was  attracted to masks (we have at least one thing in common! well, way more, in fact... I have recently grown very fond of him!). He believed they help to equalize his subjects and shift focus elsewhere— to the ambiguous and unknowable in human nature.
