new year

餅 mochi

The pounding of mochi (rice cakes)  is an old, end of the year custom in Japan.

To make the sweet, chewy ball one person pounds the rice with a wooden mallet, while another turns the usu (wooden, bucket-like container), trying to keep their hand out of the way.

These three guys, whom I met in Daikanyama yesterday, were clearly enjoying themselves.
